This video slowly zooms in 50 trillion times on a representative spot within the Mandelbrot Set. You can see this spot on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandelbrot_set . The music is my own original composition.

About the fractal video: The fractal video was rendered as an avi animation using a freeware program called Fractal Explorer. It took 16 days to render. I used 24,000 iterations, 9 points per pixel anti-aliasing, and smooth coloring. The video contains 5166 frames, each 720 x 480 pixels. The starting position is centered at -0.75 + 0i with a horizontal diameter of 4. The ending position is centered at -0.743643887037151 + 0.131825904205330i with a horizontal diameter of 7.54 x 10E-14. The computer I used to render the video is a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop (32-bit, 2.13 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, Windows Vista Home Basic Service Pack 2). I added the sound to the video using Windows Movie Maker. Note: The boundary of the fractal may seem to shimmer. This is due to Fractal Explorer's limitations on anti-aliasing.

About the music: The piano part is a loop that repeats eight times. Other layers include some mellow strings, brighter strings, bells, and two different organ sounds. I did get some inspiration from other songs, such as the Windows XP "Theme" song, and the bass line from part of "Salvation Is Here" by Hillsong United. The piano part, however, was completely original. Although it is expressed subtly, there exists an instance of augmentation of the main melody within the piece, played by the piano an octave lower than and twice as slow as the melody. The organ sound and the bells are also subtle, as I wanted emphasis on the main melody. The bells range from A2 to A5 in pitch as they play along with the melody in mixed meter. The bells have a low melody and a high melody which consists of the same notes two octaves apart. The song has a mixed time signature and is in the key of A minor. The music was recorded using a Kurzweil MicroPiano synthesizer, a Yamaha KX88 MIDI Master keyboard controller, a Yamaha KM802 mixer, and the computer mentioned above. I used a freeware program called Audacity to record directly from the mixer audio output to the line-in input on my laptop. I also used a fairly inexpensive program called Music Creator 5, by Cakewalk, to record the piano part of the song as a MIDI sequence. Note: There are a few clicks and blips in the song, but they are simply the result of a less than perfect sound card.

  • This is absolutely fascinating and beautiful!! I love your selection of colors, and the music you wrote goes with the progression of the fractal very nicely!
