William Christenberry's widely exhibited work captures the spirit of southern American culture as it is expressed through the landscape and architecture of rural Alabama . He was born in 1936 in Tuscaloosa in Hale County the same year Walker Evans and James Agee visited the county to collect materials for their famous documentary "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men." In the late 1950s, Christenberry met Evans, who helped him find a job at Time-Life and encouraged him to pursue photography in New York City . Christenberry's photographs of the artifacts and visual culture of Hale County have evolved into paintings, assemblages and sculpted building constructions. Since 1968, Christenberry has lived and worked in Washington , D.C. where he teaches at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. His work will be featured in Passing Time: The Art of William Christenberry, one of the opening exhibitions when the Smithsonian American Art Museum re-opens its historic building in July 2006.
