[Please read] Sarong-clad island girl Rozouila (Mitzi Gaynor) swoons unrequitedly over U.S. Army Capt. Willoby (William Lundigan), dances lustily to the beat of jungle drums, sings wistfully about different points of view, and overreacts continuously in "Down Among the Sheltering Palms" (1952). These clips spotlight Mitzi's wild and woolly performance. [Compare it with her "tamer" appearance as Ens. Nellie Forbush in "South Pacific" (1958).]
An expert mugger for the camera, Mitzi is paired perfectly here with veteran mugger/farceur Billy Gilbert, who plays island chief King Jilouili.
Also appearing in this film—but not, with the exception of Gloria DeHaven, in these clips—are Jane Greer, David Wayne, and Jack Paar.
This is an essential Mitzi Gaynor movie. More so than in any other film in which she took part, she is an absolute riot. "Down Among the Sheltering Palms" showcases her incomparable gifts as a comedienne, dancer, and singer.
If it hasn't occurred by the time you read this: would you like to see "Down Among the Sheltering Palms" restored and released on DVD? Please petition the studio!

Thanks for viewing. Mitzi Gaynor is my favorite American female entertainer of all time.

So who do you think is more of a riot--Rozouila or Tondelayo?
Never saw this before but I think Mitzi gives Hedy a pretty good run for the money (or the trinkets).
