On September 30, 2010, the Netherlands chapter of the Society of International Development (SID) organised the conference 'Multi Many Messy: Common Goods in a Divided World'. The speakers, amongst which Ruud Lubbers, Franz-Josef Radermacher, Eduard Nazarski, Bert Koenders and Jos van Gennip discussed the changing global order and the need to secure global common goods such, water, human rights and peace. The conference took place on the day the new government coalition announced its plans. Another hot topic was therefore: how can the Netherlands stay focused on the outside world, rather than to hide behind the dikes and dunes?
This video features a registration of the speech by Ruud Lubbers. He starts of by highlighting the differences between the Declaration of Human Rights and the Earth Charter in dealing with the global commons. He then discusses who carries what responsibility for saving our climate. A summary of the whole conference is also available (see in-movie link). Ruud Lubbers' speech is in Dutch (not translated).
