Diagnostic

The Wax Ring is the main seal between the toilet and the flange of the sewer line. Its soft wax conforms to the base of the toilet, sealing the flange and the toilet together. This wax seal will last as long as the toilet remains securely mounted to the sewer flange. If the toilet base becomes unstable, or if the toilet is removed from the flange completely, then the wax ring must be replaced.

Wax rings come in several varieties, with differences in height, and thickness. Wax rings can also include an internal rubber lip and a polyurethane mesh to stabilize the wax over a long period of time.

Parts Needed

The two items needed to replace a toilet's wax ring are: a wax ring kit, which can be purchased at a home improvement or plumbing supply store. Choose a kit where the wax ring and polyurethane lip are built together. The kit should include the mounting bolts for the base of the toilet. A cement-mixing tub will also be needed, which is a low cost solution and great for placing the toilet into after it has been removed from the sewer flange.

Tools Needed

The tools needed to replace the wax ring are: an adjustable open-end wrench, or socket wrench, a mini hacksaw, a disposable plastic scraper, plastic trash bags, paper towels, latex gloves, and a utility knife or box cutter.

Removal of Toilet

To remove the toilet, begin by turning off the water supply valve and removing the lid to the toilet's tank. Next flush the toilet to alleviate any water pressure and disconnect the toilet's water supply valve. Use a sponge and wipe out any water that is left in the toilet's tank. Then take a toilet plunger and plunge out any water that is left in the bowl of the toilet. Once the majority of the bowl water is gone take a sponge and wipe out any remaining water. Since the toilet must be placed on its side, all the toilet water needs to be removed.

Now take off the plastic mounting bolt caps from the base of the toilet and unscrew the lock nuts holding the toilet to the floor. If a lock nut has become stripped or corroded then use a mini-hacksaw to cut the bolt. Ensure that any caulk if it is present around the base of the toilet is scored with a utility knife, so that the toilet can be removed.

Once both nuts are removed position the cement-mixing tub close to the toilet. Then, grab the toilet securely while lifting with your legs, and slowly place the toilet into the cement-mixing tub.

Removal of old Wax Ring

Once the toilet is removed the wax ring will be present. To remove the old wax ring, begin by putting on latex gloves and place the trash bag and paper towels within reach of the working area. Rotate the toilet onto its side so that the toilet drain can be cleaned and the old wax ring can be removed. Once the toilet drain is cleaned, set the toilet back upright.

Then take the plastic scraper and begin to scrape off the wax from around the sewer flange and place the wax into the trash bag. When most of the wax has been removed, slide the scraper under the rubber lip of the wax ring and pry it up, discarding it into the trash bag.
