This is a video of me, playing an Irish reel on a Hohner Student 32 Melodica. The tune is called Jenny's Welcome to Charlie, learned from the playing of fiddler Paddy Glackin.

  • that work in a session?

  • It can work in a session, except that the model I got is tuned really sharp so I don't bring it out. I could retune it by filing the reeds down, but that's a pain.

People say it sounds like a concertina, except louder. It's great for cutting through a big noisy session.

  • I should also add that if anyone out there wants to learn how to play Irish music, melodica isn't really the instrument to do it on. Buy a tin whistle for $15 instead.

  • Dude- AMAZING! I just bought the Student 32 Melodica by Hohner. What key is that played in? I love Irish music and am part Irish and would like to learn it. Where could I find out the key/notes for that jig?

  • The mode is D Dorian, which is similar to D minor. If you want to learn it, the best way to do it is to listen carefully and watch my fingers. If you want written notes, you could go to a site like JC's abc tune finder and then search for "Jenny's Welcome to Charlie".

  • That's a pretty low rating for a pretty legit video. 5 stars says I!

  • Thanks Zebra. Some loser gave me a 1. I recommend other people counteract this by also rating me five stars!
