The funny thing about music and probably a lot of things. As fans we care about the finished product, but if you're involved in producing it, you care a lot about the process. I love what I heard and saw when Dickey was in the band, but apparently they weren't always enjoying themselves. PS I actually got to talk to Dickey about "Kind of Bird" and what it was like to play it on the tonight show with Doc Severensen

@Jamdor78 Butch Trucks claims that if Dickey hadn't played a song recently, he couldn't remember how it went. That they finally got Dickey to go along with a "three set" rotation so Beacon fans wouldn't hear the same set two nights in a row. Butch even claimed that Dickey couldn't remember how his own songs went including one he wrote with Warren called Kind of Bird so they couldn't play it. But if you type in "allman brothers kind of bird 1991" Dickey nails that song! So I don't know.

@Jamdor78 Gregg Allman used ear plugs when Dickey was in the band. Jaimoe complained that they were too loud & Gregg said as soon as they voted Dickey out, they had the sound man to turn it down a bit. Dickey wouldn't allow that. I'm a big Dickey fan & clearly remember after Duane died until 2000, Dickey was in charge of that band either by vote or just choosing to. Dickey would be the one pointing to the sound man to turn up or turn down the entire thing or someone's vocals etc.

@TheLethem77 I hope that would be correct about Dickey but what has he stiffed the band when invited to play a few songs for Duane in 2009 & earlier this year at the grammys? My take is Dickey Betts wants nothing to do with Butch Trucks and maybe Gregg also. I hope that is wrong as these men are getting older & lived hard. Except for Butch, Gregg is in shaky health & Dickey..I"m not sure. Butch Trucks recently said "Dickey is an alcoholic & addict".

@boblackey1 I agree. My friend used to say that though. He prefers Warren. I prefer Dickey. I do think Warren plays a little more effortlessly than Dickey, even back then. I've read a lot of quotes from Butch mostly (so take that for what its worth) that they used to have to limit the set list when Dickey was in the band, but Warren and Derek don't even need to rehearse before playing almost anything form the catalog and beyond.

@boblackey1 I think I've read a lot of quotes from band members including Warren complaining direclty or indirectly about how loud Dickey played. I know he's had my ears ringing a few times.

@boblackey1, Dickey in his recent interview video - search it. Said that the ABB was the best thing in his life, maybe if he was offered the option to reinstate himself in the band again he might positively comply because of that quote from the interview?

@Jamdor78 I don't know if Warren could blow Dickey away technically back then! They were different for sure. Dickey was more melodic & pretty with songs like Blue Sky than any guitar player ever in the ABB. There are many guitar players technically better than Warren OR any guitar player that's been in the ABB including Derek Trucks who is very good. Type in "Gary Moore Red House" & it's technically better than Hendrix or any ABB player. But is it BETTER than Hendrix? Listen & tell me.

@TheLethem77 I know how the ABB operates. It isn't up to Gregg Allman alone to ask Dickey to come back. Butch Trucks & Jaimoe would also have to place a positive vote for that. But it seems Dickey wouldn't do it even if he was asked. Dickey was supposedly invited to play at the Beacon with the band in 2009 & refused & just a couple weeks ago he declined to be on the same stage with Butch, Gregg & Jaimoe for the "lifetime achievement grammy".

@jackcame2 The Allman Brothers didn't want Jack to leave! Dickey played so LOUD it was killing his ears & Jack said either Dickey turns down or I quit. Dickey refused so he quit & Butch Trucks suggested Derek Trucks (his nephew) to Dickey & Dickey went alone with that. The next year Butch was going to quit the band due to Dickey & when he found out Gregg was giving his notice also, they got Jaimoe on the phone & Dickey was out by a vote of 3 to 1. Only original members had the power.
