Now, new cutting-edge technology is enabling us to care for newborns deprived of oxygen at birth who are at greater risk for neurodevelopmental deficiencies in childhood. The NICU at Sunrise Children's Hospital now offers total body cooling, or therapeutic hypothermia, which cools the infant's body temperature allowing the brain to rest therefore decreasing brain damage. Similar technology is being used in our ICUs to treat adult cardiac arrest patients meeting certain criteria to also prevent brain damage.
