Kate this is indeed a study in question. Taking a quick look in Anterior cingulate cortex in Wikipedia there are some interesting parallel theories. Those were done using an X instead of M or W. They were also done 10 years ago. I believe the pathology described has a much better explanation of what happens within the brain than the New York results. It could be said that "political views" might be one of the least mentioned functions, assuming it is a function rather than a reaction. :-)
