interesting how he says they didnt want to change -then how do you explain the direction they took with coverdale and hughes ...cant get more radical than that !
-

Ritchie is a fabulous quitar player, BUT as a person he seems to be weird, egoist and constantly trying to have a supremacy over band mates.( including the Rainbow). I think that Gillan got drunk mostly because of him. He have suffered . Try to find out interview with Deep Purples members (Lord, Paice and Glover) to find out the truth.

His life energy is stunning, sense of justice and his courage to quit Deep Purple in 1973, on the top of their success! Probably, he couldn't accept to be dominate by Blackmore.

I didn't want make Gillan out to be a saint, how anyone on the Earth could picture him as a saint !With his powerful, beautiful, fantastic voice? With his strong personality and physical beauty? No, no, no saint.

You forgot to mention he is ( was ) a very coarse, sexist, often drunken, stubborn person who went out of his way to annoy Ritchie Blackmore..hence part of the reason why those 2 could not get along in Purple.
Don't make Gillan out to be a saint..he isn't and he will readily admit it..try reading his autobiography !
