It depends which release you see. The one I have and the one you can see on google simply plays the Oceania national anthem at the end.

When I first saw the film, at the end when Winston says to himself "I love you", thought he still had feelings for Julia and was not defeated by the thought police after all. After reading the book, I realised that he loved Big Brother and was defeated totally. Hopeless.

I have read 1984 several times and have seen the film versions. I like to toy with the notion that Syme, for instance, was once a thought criminal "made sane" which is why he spoke so bluntly about destroying the language and then he suddenly disappeared. I even think O'Brian might have been a "cleaned" thought criminal as well since he has such a clear understanding of the truth in his discourse with Winston. One day, O'Brian too will be shot.

I haven't seen the 1956 version, but thanks for putting it on my radar. I will check it out. Thanks!

@wordreet It's not your fault, it was their record company. Seems the director of the film 1984 didn't really like the great soundtrack they submitted and it got almost zero promotion with the usual suspects at the time like MTV, etc.

Saw Annie Lennox on The Graham Norton Show the other day (BBC America). It must have been taped during AIDS awareness day. Anyway, she still has it even though I hadn't heard her in years.
