Thanks, thanks, thanks for posting that wonderful video. I saw Ghetto( by Zadek) whith Esther Ofarim in Berlin in 1984 and been looking for the song since then - and found it here today! You made my day...

Thanks so much for posting this! I saw the play at the National (London) in the 80s with Maria Friedman, and always wished there was a recording. I loved the music. I have the sheet music, but while I can read it, I can't sing, so I'm thrilled to find this. She's brilliant! I'm off to listen to more of her stuff now.

Does anyone know, where I can find a version of the song Unter deinen weissen Sternen in Yiddish? I had a recording of one which I listened to a lot when I was a younger. I just think the version in German is not as expressive and suitable. What's more, the translation that I found here on youtube is just not that good. And a hello to swissdolphin from a student from the university of Zurich.
In short, these words depict the desperation, great sadness, and destruction of the human spirit as verbalized by a woman searching for her loved one in the dark unfamiliar ghetto streets. She is begging Spring (Fruhling) to bring her loved one back; to take her heart, upon its blue wings to him. Making any comparison between the Nazi subhuman atrocities and Israel's fight for survival is out of place here and just plain ignorant!
