Introducing Drifter (the palomino) into our herd. Joe, the smallest Quarter Horse (red roan) gets yelled at for being mean. (He is the bottom of the hierarchy).

    I do know that. We just joke about it at the barn.

    The roan is at the bottom of the pecking order, so he is the most aggressive when we add new horses, because he tries to be "more important" then someone so if he can she the new horse who is boss he would no longer be at the bottom.

  • Not trying to start a fight but your horse was not being mean. He was simply being a horse. Your red roan was just putting the new horse in his place. You cant excpect to put a new horse in the pasture"herd" and think that he will just be welcomed with open arms. usually the new horse will be pushed around and kept to the outside of the herd in order to establish dominance. Many people think when your horse is biting one another that they are bing mean. There are just showing dominance.:)
