Arnold was already a general with the Americans. He actually had sound reasons to betray, in his eyes anyway. He was shot twice, once in Canada and once at Saratoga. Gates refused him any credit for the victory, thought it was he who was out in the field with the men. In Philadelphia Arnold was accused of stealing from the government and put on trial. While all this was going on he didn't receive the promotion that was owed to him.
