Howl hits theaters on September 24th, 2010.

Cast: James Franco, Mary-Louise Parker, Jon Hamm, Jeff Daniels, David Strathairn, Alessandro Nivola

James Franco stars as the young Allen Ginsberg - poet, counter-culture adventurer and chronicler of the Beat Generation. In his famously confessional, leave-nothing-out style, Ginsberg recounts the road trips, love affairs and search for personal liberation that led to the most timeless and electrifying work of his career, the poem HOWL. Meanwhile, in a San Francisco courtroom, HOWL is on trial. Prosecutor Ralph McIntosh (Strathairn) sets out to prove that the book should be banned, while suave defense attorney Jake Ehrlich (Hamm) argues fervently for freedom of speech and creative expression. The proceedings veer from the comically absurd to the passionate as a host of unusual witnesses (Jeff Daniels, Mary-Louise Parker, Treat Williams, Alesssandro Nivola) pit generation against generation and art against fear in front of conservative Judge Clayton Horn (Bob Balaban).

"Howl" is simultaneously a portrait of a renegade artist breaking down barriers to find love and redemption and an imaginative ride through a prophetic masterpiece that rocked a generation and was heard around the world.

  • @IncognitoShhh hmm yah his beard does look off.. looking more like pubes. but when i look at this tiny flaw i dont size it up as a result of the film being cheapened but rather more as a result of the film enriching the audience's experience--for the next time they reread 'Howl'--animating AllenGinsberg's own words up off of its page... ... "who got busted in their pubic beards returning through Laredo with a belt of marijuana for New York," --Allen Ginsberg, 'Howl'

  • i disliked the fact that james name is bigger then allen's when they both are on screen at one time.....

disregard the above, james is an excellent and uniq on display at all times.

  • @babybuttcool039 i ment to write a comment about just that!!!

you my friend, spoked my soul with your own words.

    thank you.

  • @pixelxse i cant say it better then you do.

    so thank you.

  • i had a good feeling for Franco...but this trailer made me to fall in love with him!!!

  • Does anyone know what that fantastic jazz track is at the end? It's not on any track lists :(.

  • Loved this movie. Felt a connection w the characters, the passion and the angst. It goes back and forth between 4 parts. The court room, the interview, the black and white flashbacks, and the awesomely animated telling of the poem..so it keeps things interesting all the way through.

  • Ray-Ban, Ray-Ban, Ray-Ban

  • He doesn't play a convincing Ginsberg.

  • Wasn't ginsberg bald? And isn't Franco too good looking to be playing him? Did this movie go straight to video, cuz i don't remember it in theatres.
