Fira is the capital of the island of Santorini and the most important village. After the earthquake of 1956 a part of the town was destroyed and only a small part of the 18th century buildings were saved. Fira is perched on the edge of an impressive cliff 854 feet high and offers a great panorama over the submerged volcano and provides some staggering panoramic views. This formation was formed over 3600 years ago and sounded the end of the Menonin Civilazation. It's made of many white painted houses in stepped streets with blue domed churches and sun-bathed verandas. The small streets during peak season period are crowed and filled with all kind of shops, jewelleries, cafe, restaurants, bars and night clubs. Fira also has a port that was, for many years, the main port of Santorini. Today, this port is only used for cruise boats. From there, boats can take visitors for a tour of the volcanic ruins that are an historic archiolgical preserve.
There are 606 steps leading down the 854 ft drop to the sea. We took the easy way up... the tram... but the walk down was a different story! What you can't experiance with this video is the amonia ladden smell left from the mules that treck up and down these steps every day and deposit an amazing 2000+ pounds of donkey dung for your walking and smelling pleasure!
The opening song is by Greek recording artist Antonis Remos and is entitled "Monos mou". Hope this helps.
