Dedicated to the memory of Elsie Mitchell, Sherman Shoemaker, Edward Engan, Jay Gifford, Joan Patzke, and Dick Patzke who tragically lost their lives on Gearhart Mountain May 5, 1945.
A large native-stone monument now stands guard on the very spot of the explosion caused by a Japanese balloon bomb. The deadly blast took the only lives lost on continental American soil (where death resulted from enemy action) during World War II.

I wonder if you have some personal connection? Showing the old church in Bly.
Elsie Mitchell was my Aunt, my Mothers sister. My family had attended the 50 year memorial and the Japanese documentary at the monument
