Once in a Lifetime Chapter 20

Brittany was on the couch curled up next to Kevin. He had his arm wrapped around her and his eyes fixed on the TV. Brittany turned her head away from the TV and studied his face. His face was relaxed and his eyes, dark and droopy. He must be exhausted, Brittany thought.
Kevin noticed she was looking at him so he shifted so he could stare into her eyes. Brittany's breath was taken away as he smiled at her. She smiled back at him then looked back at the television. Kevin kissed the top of her head then turned to the TV, too.
"Pushing me away! Every last word, every single thing you say-" Brittany grabbed her ringing phone out of her bag which was on the ground and pressed the answer button without even looking at the caller ID.
"Hello?" she said and sat up, Kevin let go of her and sat up too.
"Bayyy-bee. Oh, sweeeeetheart! Where are yaaa, sweet cheeks?!" the voice of her ex-boyfriend, Aaron, filled her ears. She gasped.
"Aaron? Whats going on? Wait, are you drunk?" Brittany became furious. She called him a few days ago and found that he had a new girlfriend, and now he wanted her back?!
"Oh, Brittany-boooo, I missssed yewww, honey-buuun. He Heeee!" he started laughing hysterically. Brittany scrunched her nose and pulled her phone away from her ear to keep it from bleeding. Then she brought it back up to her ear.
"Listen, Aaron, dont EVER call me again. Ok? I never want to speak to you again!" she raised her voice a bit to get the message though his thick, idiotic, drunk head.
"But I miss yeeeew, bayyybeee. Im 'unna to call yeeeew every daaaay until you get back toooo with er meee," he pleaded then giggled again.
"NO! LEAVE ME ALONE! I SAID I NEVER WANT TO SPEAK TO YOU AGAIN!" she screamed into the phone then hit the end button and threw the phone into her purse without even waiting for his response.
She could feel the tears forming but didnt want to cry over him. He was the dumb one. Not her. She sat back down on the couch and looked around. Catie had Nicks phone in her hands and was staring at Brittany. Nick was pretending not to pay attention by tying and re-tying his shoelace and Kevin was now sitting next to her and had his arm around her shoulders.
Joe and Ali came bursting into the room just as the bus began to roll down the road. Joe flipped the lights off the sat down on the couch opposite of Brittany and Kevin.
"What happened? Are you ok, Brittany?" Ali sat down next to her best friend and patted her hand.
"Yeah, I'm fine now," Brittany replied and grabbed Kevins hand and looked at his face. He smiled at her then leaned in to kiss her. But, this kiss wasnt like the last. Last time, they were both nervous. This time, it was normal, and easy. When Kevin pulled away, Joe exclaimed, "Hey, there you guys are! Man, I thought we might have needed to get Big Rob to use the Jaws of Life to pull you guys apart!" Ali was now lying next to Joe, watching TV. Everyone besides Brittany and Kevin cracked up at Joes remark.
Then it was quiet. Nick and Catie's heads began to droop and within minutes, they were both asleep. Ali fell asleep a few minutes later, with her head resting on Joes shoulder. Brittany glanced back at Kevin. He was out too. Then she looked back at Joe, he was also asleep. When you cant beat em, join em, Brittany thought. Then she snuggled up against Kevin's chest and listened to his slow heart beat until she drifted into sleep.
