I find most of the responses talking about the appearance and smile in the artist. The lyrics also play a part here. Almost all the Thiagaraja Krithis are patho based as he begs the lord or complains to Rama. Singer cannot be expected to smile when she reciting a song where the composer is begging and complaining. One big exception is Muthu Swamy Dixithar. His songs are always a joyfull praise on the deities of various temples.

soumya is a great singer and knows the mathematics of music better than other singers. only a fool expect singers to show smiling face,that they are not expected to smile ,if one does the focus slips and at that moment singing loses its shine.Heisenberg's uncertainity principle holds in music as well.

you are correct in the sense that appearance affects the concert. A singer with a smiling pleasant face will always be better than that same singer with a brooding face etc etc.

However, it does not take away from her skill or her devotion to carnatic music. It is very difficult to sing like she does, and some people just cant help but have those involuntary facial expressions when they sing. She is definitely enjoying it, otherwise she would stop singing.

Well .....any performance....any field...depends on thoso few hours of the performance....which is highly dependent on ones physical and mental and state of happiness.....and this song inperticular song is renders in this pace only ......and a song in a ragam like Gurjari....this speed is really apt i feel.....i have heard Smt Sowmya perform....be it the sahitya bhava or the raga bhava....she has been really good @ all of it ....

Remahariharan's observation as regards the US-visisting artists that ...'they almost have no time to lose if they had to fall sick ; is a 'matter to be rectified' - for sure !
