I don't know if they should die, but I don't think they should be encouraged as a youngster training boat. It's a fun hull alright, but it's very specific. The Optimist has the advantage of being a very good introduction to all aspects of sailing. Try getting an Opti on a plane... then try keeping it! That requires a lot of skill and boat handling ease. You can jump from an Opti to pretty much any type of boat, you cannot do the same with the O'pen.
yeah, we went through a long decision about it, and thought about a laser, but they were all out of my price range. i love to sail any kind of boats and will probably move to a double-hander or bigger single after im too old. my dad and i are looking for and old double hander to fix up. and its cool about the comment you didnt right. and the opti is a great intro to all the aspects of sailing, but i didnt really want to go the regular route of opti to 420. and btw do you crew or helm 420s?
thats cool, sorry about the comment I didn't write, I don't know who did, good luck with the o'pen, but If I were you, sailing optis or if you're too old 420's is the best choice. Lasers are good if you are big enough, as for the controls, every sail tie in an opti is a control, I just feel that the boats are such great introductions to all aspects of sailing.
ok, i never said i was a world-class sailor like you, mr. hotshot. and the o'pen has every tuning aspect an opti has with an outhaul, kicking strap, and obviously a sheet. the only thing it doesnt have is a snotter, but it has a cunningham instead. and yes, optis have done wonders for sailing over the years. i would love to make it to worlds for any kind of boat, and im working my hardest to make it for the o'pen, but my family sails big cats too. 420s are great boats as well; have fun with it.
i didn't write that last one btw.. I don't know who did, but I can see how a nice carbon fibre sail with full battons could provide for a more athletic boat, but I find that the tuning aspects of optis are much more prominent and it is such a large part of sailing. After I stopped sailing optis I started sailing 420's now, and I'm looking at yoiuth worlds possibly next year, what are you sailing?
yeah youre right, optis probably are one of, if not the, strongest singlehanded youth one design in the world. i dont really have anything against them, as i learned on them. i was just saying that thinking that a little competition for the opti should "die" is a little unreasonable. sure, the bic might not have the competitive level of the opti (yet), but it is, to me, an arguably more athletic boat. optis do take a lot of skill to sail well, but IMHO the bic more responsive/athletic of a boat.

You need more wind to really show how well this boat handles

sorry, i made a mistake on that last one about hiking out, i forgot how far out you could hike even on an optimist.
