This is my first video of the LED-LP (LED-Light Plane) 19" Widescreen Multi-touch LCD prototype I am building.

There are a total of 40 IR LED's around the LCD panel, a PS3 Eye Webcam mounted behind the LCD module, and tbeta running for the blob detection.

This video is of the tbeta main screen where the raw camera feed and applied filters can be seen.

  • I am planning to order the SFH4550 for my construction. I need to finalize how many I need.

How far apart did you place the LED? Approx. how many per inch?

Also are you pulsing them or is it a constant DC drive?

  • @Shaunakde Because my screen was relatively small in this setup, I used approx 1" spacing between LED's. I was also using constant DC to the LED's however pulsed would still work nicely.

  • @Sambora500 Thanks for all the replies. I am also planning a small set up [15"~16" screen]. I think I will place them exactly like you did, and give them a pulsed drive. Does placing the LEDs closed improve performance?

  • @Shaunakde generally the more LED's and the closer they are the better chance of bright blobs. However, too much flooding of IR from the LED's and the camera's sensitivity can be reduced. There is a happy medium but tweaking CCV settings can get around this.

  • Are you using some special LEDs [like the SFH4550] or will any general IR LEDs do?

  • @Shaunakde Yes I was using the SFH4550 LED's however any IR LED will work it just depends on the sensitivity of the camera/IR filter that you are using.
