The aim of this Mechatronics project is to develop the manual characteristics of a childs ride-on buggy to be automatically achieved in a self-contained robotic system. The task is to integrate the relevant mechanical and electrical elements needed to achieve automatic movement and control. This will allow the system to finally sense and self-navigate autonomously in order to follow an infrared source emitter. The buggy is effectively an automated robot designed to track and follow the operator.
The system has been implemented to receive infrared light from a hand-held transmitter, via receivers positioned on the front bumper of the buggy. An algorithm controlled by the microcontroller was written to calculate the direction and distance to the target that is the transmitter. This in turn provided the relevant control to the motor drive systems, and steering systems to track the buggy in the corresponding direction to infrared light source in a controlled manner.
