@ManlnCognito Well, I don't claim to be a Boxing know-it-all, but Michael Spinks went undefeated in his first 31 fights before losing to a guy who is one of the Top 10 greats of all time and was also the first to win a Heavyweight Title after coming up from the Light Heavyweight division. He was a predecessor to Evander Holyfield, if you will. Gerry Cooney, though certainly not as good, DID go 13 rounds with one of the most UNDERrated fighters of all time. Are these guys HOF class? No...
@donkeykongcoin Oddly enough, I think Spinks would've done well against either of those guys. He was a great jab fighter and could've utilized his smaller frame to go inside and land that overhand right, just like in THIS fight. It was my understanding that this was a bigger payday, but yeah, he may have been chickening out too. Who knows?
Michael Spinks picked less thretning opponents in world heavyweight his title defences. I mean pick glace jaw Stephen Tangsted (unknown outside europe) and an shot version of Gerry Cooney insteasd of fighting IBF 1# Tony Tucker or IBF 2# James Buster Douglas.
I think Cooney's chin was gone at this point. Each loss was more brutal than the last. You can't say that Cooney was a bad fighter cause he went 13 rounds with one of the all-time greats, but he did NOT recover from that loss. Most unfortunate!
@NUMBA1PROSPECT Cooney had a good jab and one of the biggest left hooks in the history of the division. By this point in his career he was battling drug addiction.
Its hard to see what this talent is that the commentators are saying Cooney has. Funny how his "talent" only showed up when he battled former top contenders who had their prime in the mid 70s. Of course the irony is that Cooney was crushed by a 70's darling (Foreman) in his next fight. Justice served by Big George!
@smoothALOE Both these guys were fed hand picked bums and has-beens.
Spinks record at light heavy was impressive but not at heavyweight.
Cooney would not have lasted five rounds with either one of the Klitschco brothers, and Spinks would have got past the third
