History of Abadan- Iran - تاریخچه کوتاه آبادان

Abadan Persian: آبادان) is a city in the Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran (Persia). It lies on Abadan Island (68 km/42 mi long, 3-19 km or 2-12 miles wide, the island is bounded in the west by the Shatt al-Arab waterway and to the east by the Bahmanshir outlet of the Karun River), 53 kilometres (33 mi) from the Persian Gulf[1], near the Iraqi-Iran border. It is the capital of Abadan County. In 2005, the population was estimated to be at 415,139. The civilian population of the city dropped to near zero during the eight-years IranIraq War. In 1992, only 84,774 had returned to live in the city. By 2001, the population had jumped to 206,073, only to double in the past five years.


Abadan (persisch آبادان‎ Ābādān /ɔːbɔːˈdɔːn/, arabisch عبدان‎ Abbadān /ʕabːaːˈdaːn/) ist eine am Schatt el Arab gelegene Stadt in der Provinz Chuzestan im Südwest-Iran.
Abadan liegt ca. 50 km vom Persischen Golf entfernt auf einer 270 km² großen Insel. Die Stadt hat etwa 400.000 Einwohner und ist mit einer der größten Raffinerien der Erde ein Zentrum für die iranische Erdölindustrie. Im Ersten Golfkrieg ab 1980 wurde die Stadt teilweise zerstört.
Die Stadt hat einen internationalen Flughafen und beherbergt ein 1939 gegründetes technologisches Institut.
1847 trat die Türkei das Gebiet der Stadt an den Iran ab. 1908 wurden Ölvorkommen gefunden und 1909 entstand die erste Raffinerie.
