This was a travesty, russia had been provoking Georgia for years- shooting down it's UAVs (then denying it until they got video of it) giving out mass citizenship to entire towns in Georgia.
They tried to starve Georgia into submission by placing embargoes on it and cutting of it's energy (that Georgia had paid for) . When that failed russia supplied the rebels in south ossetia and in abkhazia with arms and protection in hopes they could do what russia failed to do-provoke Georgia to attack.
