STORY:
Distraught relatives of the dead and injured in a suicide bomb blast in northern Sri Lanka gather at the hospital where the victims were taken. At least 12 people have been killed and 22 wounded in the attack in front of a police station in Vavuniya town. Several children are said to be among the victims.
The bomber pulled up on a motorcycle before detonating his explosives.
Sri Lanka's military is blaming Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack. The conflict, a quarter of a century old, re-ignited two years ago. Fighting has intensified since January when the government annulled a Norwegian-brokered truce after six years.
The government is vowing to finish off the rebels by the end of the year.
Analysts say the army has the upper hand in the latest phase of the conflict but see no clear outcome on the horizon.
