http://www.musiciano.net - Here are some ideas on how to explore and play around with the articulators that affect the resonance of sounds we produce. Keyword is play, play is usually safe, if the focus in on fun. Make sure you have a good silent foundation by ensuring that you are well rested, well hydrated, well stretched and well warmed-up.

  • Expect setbacks and frustration. Also expect discomfort and confusion. All transformation requires a period of chaos. The fastest way to improve in my opinion is with the help of an experienced outsider that can help orient you in the process. For now, incorporate body motion (pretend like you are swimming, kneel like a puppy, rotate your shoulder, move your head, etc) as you practice... this will distract the mind and body to speed things up a bit. Good luck and I'm always here!

  • Hey asc, sure I can help you. What you are trying to accomplish takes a great deal of time. Your brain and body have been conditioned to work a certain way for many years and the shift you are attempting to integrate will take a long time. An outsider with experience in the field can certainly help you speed up the process, but you will not be able to skip the basic amount of time it takes to reprogram the body. What you are going through is normal and natural. Reconditioning yourself takes time

  • ... of a professional singer (amazing). But after a while of practicing, the entire back of my mouth starts to tense up and I get a gag reflex (very uncomfortable) and I quickly fall back to my old resonance. I try to relax, but to no avail, and it stays that way for hours. What am I doing wrong? How can I more effectively get the middle/back resonance? Rarely, I get the American accent without the tension, but then it still fades away after a few minutes of speaking. Any help is appreciated.

  • Hey musiciano. I hope you can help me out. I've come in contact with the concept of voice resonance while trying to get rid of my accent and getting a more American accent. My native language resonates in the front of the mouth, while a General American accent has a middle-to-back resonance. In order to achieve that, I try to get the back of my tongue down (this is the hard part). WHEN I succeed, it sounds very authentic, almost completely American. Also, my voice sounds more like that (cont) ..
