"If voting is only one tool in the toolbox, that means there's more work to be done. After election day I think it's really critical that we begin to find ways, to develop ways to hold our elected leaders accountable to the different issues they said they would champion for our communities."

Laurie Weahkee from the Native American Voters Alliance sat down with El Grito to discuss the importance of having Native communities come out to vote in this year's general election.

Laurie stresses that voting is an effective way to have influence in how local and state government allocates resources and protects the interests of different communities, and that small communities can make big impacts in close races.

Laurie also expressed her hope that young Native people will get out to vote and continue to be evolved in politics, because "the truth is that's really where the decisions are being made about you, about your community."
