"Wanted! 500, 000 Canadians for WW I"
Desmond Morton, McGIll University
It may seem odd, but most recruiting in Canada for the First World War happens spontaneously. Close to a million Canadians volunteer, some many times. Local militia regiments compete by organizing battalions of about a thousand men. Not until 1916 does Ottawa spend money on recruiting and then only in Quebec, where volunteering lags. Why do men join the Canadian Expeditionary Force -- or what do recruiters think will persuade them?
