Patricia McKenna and no-campaigners at the old sugar factory in Carlow. Since 1926 the sugar industry was the first state industry in Ireland. The Carlow sugar factory was closed on 11 March 2005 with the loss of 190 full time and 130 seasonal jobs. The Sugar Company blamed the shutdown on EU sugar policy reform which will involve cuts in subsidies and quotas.

Promises will be broken again.
