@ThinkDeepThoughts I'm not saying it's "cruel" (at least, not the idiotic waving of the bags) but if it is necessary to make your horse "alert" then you must have a horribly sleepy horse. Why do they need to look like spaz attacks when they go into the ring? They're dashing about like maniacs. So I can bring an ill-behaved, poorly conformed horse, and as long as it acts like its tail is on fire, it's a champ?
Pathetic. I prefer a horse who can do something useful, not just freak out on me.
I note everyone's use of the term "industry". This suggests to me that it is highly profit-oriented- maximum profit, perhaps even at the expense of the horse's welfare.
NOT all horses rear when excited. If I ride a horse at my local barn, and it starts rearing, it is freaked out. "Excited" would be full of energy, ready to go, without spazzing and flouncing around at the end of the rope.
It doesnt spook them its done to get them to move and go and show off all they do is shake it the whip and the bag , it doesnt spook them i promise it just moves them along
Sorry to be blunt, but I really don't think you know what you're talking about. Hazzing is done to help them stay alert, aware of their surroudings, and to sort of wake them up before they go into the class. Don't forget, these are show horses, they've seen it all, and what would spook an average horse sitting in a pasture wouldn't necessarily spook a show horse. It's not cruel, nor is it done to abuse them in anyway!
@cyberg00se It's called hazing, and it just gets them excited before they go into the halter class, so that they can show themselves off to the best of their ability. It's not cruel or anything, and it does help them stay altert.
I know what sacking is, and it's to make them all flashy and purtty and sweaty and tense and excited and spazzed out and nothing like they actually are.
Call it what it is. Proud to say my Arabian doesn't fall for that crap.
"Keep them paying attention" - yeah right, as if there isn't enough going on for that. They (generally) love excitement, no need for all the fake crap just because judges are too stupid to see past it.
I love Arabians! Great video. I go to almost every show that Scottsdale has. I am competing in my first show in March and I am suuuper exited, kinda like those horses is the video. :) Those bags aren't used to spook the horses, it is to keep them awake, on cue, and used to their surroundings with a lot of noise and distractions because people will probably cheer in the bleachers. If the horses didn't like it then they would make a way to tell their owners. I help at their shows and I love it :)
its not to make them go on there toes , the noise excites them while the bag itself peeks there attention . if you ever actually seen how the bags are used in person you might understand better. there are not dangerous or ruined you simply do not understand how this industry works and people will only get hurt either by an natural accident or if they get in the way or improperly train there horses . Has nothing to do with the bags . although the chasing with them is unnecessary .

Lol. My arab is really calm and hates lunging. He prolly would jump when someone ran at him with the bag, but afterwards be all 'o whatever'

@KierneyKatastropheOx Do you get off on typing a capital for every first letter on every single word?
