This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the various consoles I own. This is played on a PS2 with texture smoothing on.
At first glance to most people watching this who don't know about this game, it will seem like a total and complete blatant rip-off of Twisted Metal, and You'd be right.
However, keep in mind that it is made by Single Trac who are actually the original developers of the Twisted Metal franchise, and made the original two TM games.
This can honestly be looked upon as a side note to the TM franchise, because of the developer behind it.
Rogue Trip puts it's own twist on the TM formula though. Now instead of just focusing on killing everyone else, the game throws in a twist where you have pick up tourists and take them to photo spots in order to earn money (think of it as a kind of hold the flag mode). The money you earn can the be used to heal your vehicle at repair points (which becomes a crucial part of the gameplay), or can even be used to buy upgraded weapons (mid match) at other upgrade points. If you get a certain amount of money at the end of a level, you are awarded with an extra life as well.
From a general gameplay standpoint, this game has everything you loved in the TM series. It recaptures the feel perfectly. The only thing it's missing it of course the trademark TM characters, however it's cast of characters is decent enough.
There's really not a whole lot I can say about this one. If you like Twisted Metal, then you'll find a lot to like about Rogue Trip. However, if you were never a fan of TM, then you'll probably not be a fan of this game either.
The only real downside I can put on this one, aside from it not having the TM characters, is that the maps aren't quite as good as those in TM, or more notably, Twisted Metal 2. However, since TM2 is still the best car combat game ever IMO (Vigilante 8 was always horribly overrated, and it was a disgrace to see some magazines putting it over TM2 because it's graphics were shinier), that really can't be held against Rogue Trip.
Rogue Trip is only available on the PS1.
NOTE: Just to keep the record straight, I like Vigilante 8, but feel that it was way overrated. Fun, yes, but most of it's hype at the time was because it had prettier graphics than Twisted Metal. Now that those graphics have faded, the game doesn't hold up nearly as well whereas TM2 is still a blast IMO.
NOTE: This is the second time I uploaded footage of this game. The first time, the music police came by, because the game features a Mighty Mighty Bosstones song in it, and they put their filthy adds on my vid, so I deleted it. This footage features other songs from the game that aren't owned by a major greedy record label, so enjoy.
i like the way it has the same sound effect as twisted metal 2. did they do this because they got baugh by gt?
