After the tragedy of the SIEV 36 incident in which five Afghani asylum seekers died, many in politics, the media and the community blamed people smugglers for the deaths. People smugglers have typically been portrayed as shadowy, evil figures, exploiting human misery for financial gain, and risking lives by using dangerous vessels to transport people. But it's rare that the inner workings behind this murky industry are explored. What motivates people smugglers, and how do they operate? Who are there main clientele? In this fascinating expose, international migration expert Khalid Koser shares his research on the economic motivations of those involved in smuggling migrants, and the massive and complex industry that has sprung up around them.
