Kauai's "Tree Tunnel" on the way to Koloa was planted more than 150 years ago. A wealthy Scottsman and Kauai cattle rancher, Walter Duncan McBryde, donated more than 500 Eucalyptus trees left over from landscaping his estate.

The tunnel's Eucalyptus Robusta trees, sometimes called Swamp Mahogany, are native to southeastern Australia. They grow to heights of 180 feet or more. The top of the tree tunnel was damaged by Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Iniki in 1993, but has grown back.
