Allegiant Air 799 Knoxville, TN(TYS) to Sanford, FL (SFB) in an MD80 in a storm. Filmed 7:35AM June 17, 2009. If you crank the volume you can hear some alarms or sounds that sound like maybe they came from the cockpit. Anyone know? I could hear it much louder after we were boarded plane sitting there waiting to taxi. Its like a high pitched alarm sound or something. When I first heard it I thought maybe it was a police car in the distance until I realized it was coming from the plane. I could hear it all through taxiing but once the plane took off it was harder to hear. You definitely can hear it in the vid tho. If anyone knows what sound this is please comment and tell me. Im very curious. Crank the volume around 1:16 to 1:30 and then 1:35 to 1:50 and if you crank it and listen it almost sounds like a police siren in the distance. It was louder to the ears on the plane.

  • Yer... I can hear the sirens too. As a pilot, that sounds to me like the stick-shaker... don't be concerned, but this warns the pilot he/she is about to stall the aircraft. LOL... so not good :(..

    Matt:)

  • Finally some input!! Why would this be going off when we're just sitting there boarded plane just sitting there? It had started before we even began to taxi. What would cause that to happen?

  • Hello Again,

If you heard it before and while taxiing, it is more that likely several warnings running on the same claxon/alarm. Another thing that could happen it the APU circuit breakers. These don't normally break, but if they do it is never serious.

    Matt:)

  • Finally some answers. Thanks. Ive been SO curious about that cuz Ive never heard anything like it before in flight. I cant say I was the most comfortable person in my seat being able to hear those sounds and knowing it was coming from the plane but Im sure they wouldnt have flown if it was that much of a danger.

  • I really cannot hear any siren, just the usual noises of a normal take off.

And for sure this has nothing to do with a stall!

The recovery procedure in case of a stall is pretty aggressive at low altitudes, with marked pitch and power changes, the video shows nothing but a normal take off.

The only audible sound I can think of is that of the stabilizer trim aural warning. On the MD-80 series airplanes, when you change the trim setting, a horn sounds every 0,5 degrees.

  • This is completely normal, and it's very useful for the pilots, especially if the autopilot is flying the aircraft,as it helps you to maintain an audio awareness of the trim position. If the trim setting is changing,it means that the attitude and the speed of the aircraft are changing. If these changes are not intentional than the trim aural warning warns you that something is wrong before you get in troubles.

You hear the same noise on the ground when the pilot select the trim setting for takeoff.

  • I am no dc9 expert, but I believe it has something to do with igniting the fuel in the engines. You can hear them on startup of this dc9-50 watch?v=qZfUx9md33s but I don't know why they are on during mid flight of your dc9-80. Maybe something to do with the humidity, but I'm not an expert. Just an enthusiast.

  • oh, going to add could be the wind gust/shear warning...

  • the siren could also be due to the weather radar, different planes have different types of warnings

  • i hate the really long plane rides

  • it sounds like it could be one of the hydralic pumps

  • If you heard alarms on the ground it was the flight crew performing their checks of all the warnings and aircraft systems. The only sounds I could hear in your video were engines SLIGHTLY out of sync (each engine at a slightly different RPM).

  • it could be anything. the engines out of sync (perfectly normal) bells and whistles from the cockpit, also perfectly normal, it is not a stall warning. I suggest searching on youtube for MD80 cockpit videos and you will hear their unique sounds, bells and whistles!
