It's the other way around - LEAN means its getting less fuel, and RICH means its getting more fuel, amount of air is always same.

lean means the car isn't getting quite enough air for the amount of fuel being used, but still enough to run, apposed to running rich which is when your not giving it enough gas for the amount of air its getting. both result in bad performance and can eventually damage the motor. (this also applies to your own car)
