The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947) is perhaps the most romantic score written by Bernard Herrmann, a composer whose music was often criticized as being cold and detached, Here however his scoring ranks alongside the best of Alfred Newman. The movie is beautifully directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz with excellent photography by Charles Lang Jr. Both Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison have an electric on - screen chemistry and George Sanders plays the cad at his roguish best. It also had a young Natalie Wood as Mrs. Muir's daughter. This suite of Herrmann`s music consist`s of ..... Main Title / Local Train / The Sea / The Ghost / Bedtime / Pranks / Lucia / Dictation / London / The Passing Years / The Late Sea / End Title.

  • The true mark of a score so excellently composed is this one from Herrmann, you are held by the on screen visual while almost oblivious to the interplay from the score it is so perfectly matched to your emotional state as you watch the screen play unfold, this is if I am truly honest my favourite of Genes movies, haunting just like Gene and Herrmann's score is partially the reason for this as it somehow almost tells Genes own sad story and final triumph.

I have to agree, one of the most perfect movies ever made. I have seen it more times than I can remember since childhood and I still love it to this day. Although for sheer magnetism Gene Tierney`s performance in ''Laura'' accompanied by David Raksin`s haunting theme gets me every time.

  • Well done!

This is one of my favorite movies. I had heretofore not paid much attention to the musical score. I guess the reason is that it blended so well with the action on screen. The score runs the whole gamut of emotion from being otherworldly to fanciful to thoughtful to frightful to foreboding to loving to hopeful to uplifting.

Your picture presentation to fit the score is excellent.

Thank you so much for uploading this score. Kudos to you.
