We must choose our words carefully.
---- When someone uses the word "Columbia," whom exactly do them mean?

In the context of the plan to build a new Columbia campus in West Harlem, "Columbia" is not an appropriate word to use -- It is an enormously broad and vague label, Columbia is a huge institution with tens of thousands of students, faculty, and staff members.

But Columbia students, faculty, and staff do not want to kick Harlem residents out of their homes and careers.

So who does? Who is doing this?

If we continue to use the label "Columbia" we will continue to hide those people who are Actually Responsible under the disguise that all of Columbia agrees with them and wants the expansion to happen this way.

We must identify Who is actually expanding Columbia's campus, because the last time I checked, it was not the 7,169 Columbia undergraduates, not the 17,065 Columbia post-grads, not the 3,566 Columbia academic staffmembers, nor is it many of the thousands of other people who are a part of Columbia.

It is a small group of people claiming that they are working for the Public Benefit and for Our Benefit. But what about the people who live in Harlem today?!

IF YOU DON'T USE YOUR VOICE
SOMEONE ELSE WILL USE IT FOR YOU

Community to Preserve Coalition Rally
Corner of Broadway and 125th St
Outside of the Columbia University Employment Information Center

"It's not a matter of rhetoric to say that Columbia must pull back and rethink this project," said DeMott. "There are still businesses along this stretch and a lot of the construction has not started. There's still time to find another way to do this."
