Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is slated to launch his Orissa tour from the state's backward Kalahandi-Bolangir-Koraput (KBK) region on March 7. This region is also known as the country's hunger zone. Rahul Gandhi is likely to lay thrust on unemployment, education, farmer and tribal issues during his Orissa tour.
Starting from Nuapada, Gandhi will visit Sinapali village to inspect the implementation of the Western Orissa Rural Livelihoods Project, a joint venture of the state government and DFID - Britain's Department for International Development. Due to repeated droughts, agricultural system has deteriorated in the Kalahandi region. Watershed Development projects were planned to help in reclamation of land, growth in agriculture and livelihood pattern.
But the highlight of his first day in Orissa will be his interaction with various tribal groups of Klahanie. In Lanjigrah, he will interact on a one to one basis with tribal groups such as Dongria & Jharnia & later at Bhawanipatnam Rahul Gandi will address a Jungle Bachao Rally. At Damanjodi of Koraput he will interact with forest dwellers from nearby villages.
A controversial project by a private international company wants to mine bauxite in Kalahandi's, but the local Niyamgiri hills but thousands of tribal people say the project will force them from their homes and destroy their livelihoods.
Talking to the media a resident of village Langigarh said " the open-cast mine would also wreck the rich biodiversity of the hills and disrupt key water sources that supply springs and streams in the area and feed two rivers which irrigate large farmlands. Niyamgiri Hills is part of an elephant corridor which shelters leopards and is the only known home in Orissa of the rare golden gecko.
In Koraput Rahul Gandhi will have an interactive meeting with students.
Over four days Gandhi will visit as many 13 of the total 30 districts of the State. He aims to visit interior areas of the State to understand and feel the problems being faced by the farmers, tribal people and the youth of Orissa.

Starting his 4 day tour of Orissa, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi visited Nangalpur village of Nayapara district.
Mr. Gandhi visited the Watershed Development project which is under construction and is expected to help in reclamation of land, growth in agriculture and livelihood pattern. Media persons were not allowed to enter the project area as Rahul Gandhi interacted with the tribal people and gathered information about the progress of the project.
Mr.Gandhi visited a Jan Sampark Fair organized by some NGO's working in this area. 10 stalls displayed fruits and vegetables of high quality, poultry, handicrafts etc. Congress MP took deep interest in the exhibits. All tribal people & Ngo's present met with the MP and shared their problems with him.
The villagers and their families, excited and pleased with Rahul Gandhi's visit shouted slogans welcoming him.
Nayapara is one of the most backward districts of the country and many tribal people thought that Mahatma Gandhi or Rajeev Gandhi was visiting their village. On meeting Rahul Gandhi, they shared their problems and the MP assured them that he would carry their grievances to Delhi and ensure that they are addressed.
A group of women from Pahria tribe met Rahul Gandhi. Pahria tribal people are enlisted in the OBC category in Orissa, whereas in Chattisgarh they have the scheduled tribe status. The women handed over a letter to Rahul Gandhi requesting him that they too should be given the scheduled tribes status.
Speaking to the media people Rahul Gandhi said " the area is indeed under developed and was in dire need of development ".
