Mary Black along with De Dannan and Caroline Levalle playing cello, singing Paddy's Lamentation.

Well it's by the hush, me boys, and sure that's to hold your noise
And listen to poor Paddy's sad narration
I was by hunger pressed, and in poverty distressed
So I took a thought I'd leave the Irish nation.

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin.

Well I sold me horse and cow, my little pigs and sow
My little plot of land I soon did part with
And me sweetheart Bid McGee, I'm afraid I'll never see
For I left her there that morning broken-hearted.

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin.

Well meself and a hundred more, to America sailed o'er
Our fortunes to be made [sic] we were thinkin'
When we got to Yankee land, they shoved a gun into our hands
Saying "Paddy, you must go and fight for Lincoln".

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin.

General Meagher to us he said, if you get shot or lose your head
Every murdered soul of youse will get a pension
Well meself I lost me leg, they gave me a wooden peg,
And by God this is the truth to you I mention.

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin.

Well I think meself in luck, if I get fed on Indian buck
And old Ireland is the country I delight in
With the devil, I do say, it's curse Americay
For I think I've had enough of your hard fightin'.

Here's you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have ye's not be going
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin.

  • Whoever dislikes this has no respect for true American history. No group formed what is modern America like the Irish did. And I say this as a descendant of mostly English.

  • @jackdoldseven Not my war.The war was fought by my family in Ireland.I know you don't care.Don't bother me about it then.

  • @Marydawgs *Sigh* And I'm telling you I don't care. And niether did my fore-bearers. Sometimes wars cause internal problems. So it's not always "for your country". There's multiple sides to a conflict. I'm not pretending to understand your war it's just war in general. When I'm of age I intend to join the U.S Army and when I am deployed I'm not going to pretend it's for my entire country. It's for a certain point of view that I may not agree with. And my kid's don't have to either.

  • @edelahaye One subject leads to another.Get it?Like you are going to reveal something about Irish history that I don't know.

  • @jackdoldsevenMy mother & father came from Ireland. They didn't forget the fighting & hardships caused by England. That's what I'm referencing here.My mother's brothers & older sister were active in the IRA & fought against both the Black & Tans & Brit Army. When they came to America they were glad to become US citizens but told their children about their experiences, good & bad,in Ireland.I & my siblings know Irish history. It's not about hatred. It's about fighting for your country.

  • @Marydawgs What British Army ? Does 'Lincoln' ring a bell ?

  • @jackdoldseven Possibly, but to be honest, who cares ?

  • @TheDallasDragon This comment is irrelevent. The topic of the song is about Irish immigrants enlisted into the Civil War when arrivng in New York (USA). See the last part of Scorcese movie "Gangs of New York".

  • @Roxashater3 Yes, and it suits perfectly (place and time). Good historical documentary research made by the Scorsese team about this film.

  • @Marydawgs As bitter as you sound maybe its for good intent they left the hate behind to fester in their own homeland as it impotently simmers without any action other than expressful comments on youtube and other bullshit media.
