A video clip from the History channel. Without examining the rifle in hand, the first double with exposed hammers is likely a blackpowder muzzle loader judging from the hammers. The men are riding in a 'howda', the name of the carriage on the elephant, and it is a diorama of British 'gentlemen' on a Tiger hunt in india in mid to the late 1800's.

The second rifle is an example of a, very rare for that time, 4 bore double rifle. Many 4 bore rifles existed but the vast majority were single barrel due to the massive weight. Rounds were, at that time, loaded with black powder, and though huge, power remained realtively weak compared to later smokeless rounds. A hunter would carry a 'stalking' rifle, leaving a gun bearer to carry 'the heavy'. only in close quarters or dense brush would the hunter switch weapons. The question I'd like to know is if Holland and Holland would still produce such a rifle. If they did, I'm sure the cost would be at least $500,000 and probably be the better part of five or seven years to make... anyone know?

  • The son of a bitch put a round in and pointed it at the camera. He shouldn't be allowed to handle such a fine weapon.

  • @Loganrbennett The round he loaded was a dummy cartridge.. Not a live round..

  • thats not a fucking rifle. its a dam protable howitzer

  • @AnimalMother63 While it looks big, overall the terminal effects are enimic as compared to more modern weapons. remember, it was using black powder as a propellant: This limits the velocity of the round to 1200 fps or there-a-bouts... So, penetration would be no where near as good as a smaller diameter round traveling at much higher velocities using modern smokeless munitions.. And as a bonus, modern weapons are much lighter. But, its remains a "neat" weapon from the day.

  • "The only thing that stops a charging pissed off large animal is a shot to the head."

Oh I don't know, one of those to the chest would probably calm a charging animal down some...maybe reduce it to a fast trot. LOL!

  • @ColonelAllan Indeed. One of Ross Seyfried's 'stopping' techniques was a full solid straight thru the body cavity of the charging animal. From entering at the chest to exiting of the ass.. I forget the exact quote of his, but if I remember correctly it never failed to stop any animal in his vast African guiding experiences..

  • @full123moon pause @0:57 and look at the inside of the muzzle. You will notice rifling, therefore it is a rifle.

  • What's the name of the documentary.

  • Those guns can break your arm and push at least 5ft away. Lol

  • You can still buy a 700NE double for around 100 thousand dollars and 100 bucks a shot.

  • @krazy4knives Glad everything worked out. :D

  • @ColonelAllan actually, you can still be killed after shooting an animal in the head. my granddad was attacked on a hunt in Tennessee by a charging wild dog, shot it in the head with 12 gauge buckshot, and it still ran at him. nerves still alive i guess idk. this was in the 80s in case youre wondering, and yes my granddads a redneck just like me XD

  • @hwoods01 no it was a live cartridge! and he shot the cameraman at the end of it all! "now you know too much....BLAM!"

  • @hwoods01 Fantasctic weapon! Ill bet modern powders would push that enormous projectile much faster though, Rendering it quite an equal comparison to Mr Animal Mothers point. :)

  • @hwoods01 I think you are under estimating the power of black powder. The MUCH smaller .577 Snider got up to 1300 fps, and that has a fraction of the powder behind it as that 4 bore would have. It would have to get up to around 3-5000 fps at least. I think that thing would give modern .700 Nitro Express rounds a run for their money pretty easily. I dare say I think it would able to keep pace with auto cannon rounds in terms of power.

  • @Blopartyhut Wounded? Him, and everyone BEHIND him would be dead.
