Unlike Karajan, Dudamel is not bound to meter. He is going to twist the time a little bit to squeeze just an ounce more emotion out of the music. As in life, one wishes the most gorgeous moments to last a bit longer, and sometimes Dudamel obliges. The orchestra seems to cease to have parts, and functions as if it is one body. Every phrase is allowed to reach fruition, and then we get another present from the next one. I feel privileged to realize that this genius is alive in my time here.
