very nice..exept you fly through it by plane...at the airports it is a huge problem...Last year Ryan Air Rome emergency landing after multiple bird strikes with sparrows...

my guess:
they are eating ..it's evening and all the insets are coming out...flying...
(have you ever seen the moskito's clouds in the evening )..
but...they do or-in a special palce(like in rome over the water i guess)...or-like fishes-to look bigger and not to be eaten themselfs...

Do you know what they are doing? Escaping from several hawks! It's the same behaviour of various species of fish.

Saw this scene yesterday at the station. A beautiful day. Must have been a few million birds up there.

Wonderful. Starling numbers have collapsed in the UK and nobody knows why. Whatever Rome has, we have lost. Our starling flocks are only about 10% of the number of birds here. Thanks :-)
