I find it depressing how most people got here but I guess that just means I am old and they are young. Her song rings true for my generation - not so sure about this one. I was an ugly girl at 17, actually I wasn't but I felt it. She is singing about that perception, based on the pecking order of social stuff: parties, boys etc. We get past it but it hurts like hell in those crucial years. At least she recognised she was an ugly duckling - beautiful swan.

When I saw her perform this (back in the 70s) she did say that she had to take a moment to get back into that headspace, because she wasn't feeling that bad about herself (at the time of the concert).
