I know you're thinking that there are ten essentials instead of five, but I believe that these five items will take care of all of your immediate needs in the woods if you know how to use them and can be creative in dealing with emergencies.

  • i done a contest with the near famous dave canterbury and he narrowed it from 10 to 5 to 3, what would your 3 items be,tintin

  • I unfortunately missed Dave's contest but if I hadn't missed it I would have used:

    1. My Becker bk-2

    2. My canteen cup

    3. Mag block firestarter

Of course, his rules stated that you can use your clothing and parts of it as well so that means I would have had use of my belt and boot laces too.

  • although, I should add that in a realistic situatioin, if you can carry 3 items, you can carry 5 just as easily... the contest would have been fun, and demonstrating resourcefulness and skill is always a good thing, but it wasn't really intended to demonstrate that you only need to carry three items.

I should also add that I have a great deal of respect for Dave and his accomplishments, but I don't believe in gurus and I am not a follower of any man, regardless of whether or not he is famous.

  • we use firesteel because, we will know we can always get a fire started with it, and it will make many fires, if done right.

  • I think you're right... but I think that there's a certain romance to using a firesteel that isn't there when you "flick a bic"

  • Nice overview. thanks for posting.

  • We basically agree... In an emergency I would prefer to have these specific items because of the speed in which I can erect a shelter, start a fire and maintain my clean water supply. I agree with your asessment, except that I always have cordage in my clothing and boots. (more on this in the next video) I also think that it's best to have a cooking vessel AND a water storage vessel so that you can boil water or cook food without first having to empty your canteen. Thus the canteen AND cup.
