(10 minute version) IS 259 Transports You to 1930s New York. Students at IS 259: William McKinley Intermediate School, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, have set about creating what has grown into a 2,500 square foot hallway mural up to 12 feet high in places - that includes over 500 original student poems and essays. The mural drew its inspiration from the New York of the 1930s, especially Art Deco, Jazz, Painting, and Film history, and the Mythology of Egypt, Greece and Rome. Initially a collaboration between the Arts Teacher and English Teacher, the mural was conceived, constructed and painted solely by the students. A fusion of visual arts, literacy and social studies, the mural has become a dynamic tool for teaching and learning, and a source of pride for the students, the school, and the community.

Quite possibly the best tool a teacher can have to drive learning, teamwork, art, and culture. Well done CAENYC!
