Troy Davis was one of several black men in a poorly lit parking lot on the night that Officer MacPhail was killed by one man acting alone. Troy has always maintained his innocence.

One of the other black men in the parking lot at that time was Red Coles. Red eventually admitted to being armed with the same type of weapon used to kill Officer MacPhail. According to sworn affidavits, Red was seen just after the shooting trying to get rid of his .38 caliber revolver. Three other witnesses have since acknowledged, under oath, that Red confessed to killing Officer MacPhail.

Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and David Evans were also falsely accused when they were included in a photo lineup based solely on their presence at the scene of a reported crime. Each one maintained his innocence. Each of these young men had the resources to obtain a zealous advocate and was ultimately exonerated.
