A training drill used to emphasise the contribution of the hips through the hitting zone. A great drill to use that enhances swing mechanics but without the club in hand!

  • Rob: thanks for posting this-it's really useful. My left hip on the downswing is sliding more than rotating and I "come over the top." Can you give me an external swing thought for left hip rotation? eg "turn in a barrel"

  • I'd revisit the age old drill off placing a blocking post next to your left hip and then swinging. In fact I wouldnt swing a golf club for a start.... i'd throw a ball, or preferably a light med ball in a rotary side on throw. I use a foam roller standing on its end. get the feel of propulsion rotation with throwing and then transfer that into your swing. There is an article on this on my website at physicalgolf called "less slide at the hips part 2"

  • I dont like this work out.. Your going to sprain your front knew because hie's throwing the ball straight.. and keeping the hands high..

  • Gyro, if I am going to sprain my knee please tell me when, as I have been doing this drill for many years now and it hasn't happened yet. The rotary (transverse) plane is the most important in propulsion sports (golf). Our hip is uniquely designed with a large range of internal rotation, this couples with ankle and spinal mechanics to allow us to aggresively internally rotate, the knee doesnt take the hit. But if folks have reduced int. rotation mechanics it does, hence they need to do the drill

  • Excellent drill. If you look at the finish position and sequencing of today's top golfers, their right knee is pointed at the target at the end of the swing.

  • hey i have a problem with my hips, butt etc falling towards the golf ball this is leading to a huge in to out swingpath and shanks. Any gd drills or tips you could giv me?

  • This is a great drill to fix numerous swing flaws, add distance, and help get your body in descent shape. People ask how to hit it longer, and this is a text book drill to add 15 yards because it speeds/strengthens the glutes and hips and creates a transition allowing players to make solid contact. The only bad thing is the noise will drive your family crazy. Thanks for the drill.

  • Excellent Drill robw200 , simple to do, well explained and does not leave the viewer confused....

  • Thanks for the great drill! I've been working with my instructor to get my hips to be 42 degrees open at impact. The problem is I can either do this or hit the ball not BOTH! When I rotate my hips and shoulders on the downswing It's really hard for me to hit the ball well or at all. It feels like I'm going to hit the ball straight to the left (pull) and that I'm coming outside to in across the ball. Please if you have any ideas please let me know! Thanks

  • I agree with the concept of rotating the hips.. I do this to drive the ball and find it to be the most consistant way to hit the ball straight and far.. I find that standing on the balls of your feet is importaint in order not to fully plant the back foot.. Its a hard game to figure out
