    Not only does he take the hits to show that he's superior, which I agree on, but he also may not physically be able to feel it. The mask alleviates the pain of his injury that he sustained during his time in the pits, leading me to believe that it also alleviates any pain (Up to a certain point) caused externally. Just a theory.
