This bridge crosses the Oi river (Oigawa) in Shizuoka prefecture Japan. This bridge is listed in with the Guiness Book of World Records as the world's longest pedestrian bridge. The bridge is located near the site of the old porter station where travelers on the historic Tokaido highway would negotiate being carried across the river. Japan's Shogun (military rulers) forbid bridges over this river during the feudal period as a means of security due to the fact that the rivers dangerous waters made it difficult for rebellious armies to cross. The first bridge over the Oi river was built during the Meiji period (1868-1912) shortly after Japan opened its doors to the outside world.

  • Wow...that looks like a tough workout!

How long is that bridge anyway?

  • @BusanKevin I was indeed worn-out after this long session of skipping (though nothing like the marathons you do, Kevin). I tried to look up the length of this bridge without any luck. It went on and on and on if that is any help (I know, not much) -Kurt :-)

  • Real men are not afraid to skip!

    Nice one, brother!

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom Some of the people I encountered on the bridge were quite amused by my antics. It was certainly a fun day! ~Kurt :-)

  • been to akashi-kaikyo, the longest suspension bridge in the world. sadly didn't know about that one, looks nice!

  • @Milchmann2 I have not yet been to akashi-kaikyo though I hope to see it one day. Thank you for watching! ~Kurt :-)

  • Father of my friend worked as a director to maintain this bridge.

There was support from administration, but maintained it only with inhabitants led by the farmer in old days now.

The people who walked in the field of the opposite bank seem to have decreased now.

An international airport is made to the farm of the opposite bank now.

  • @softypapa

The bridge was registered in The Guinness Book of Records as the longest wooden walking bridge in 1997.

It is 897 meters long. ;).

  • It looks like fun!

  • Hahahahahaha!!!

I didn't know we had the longest wooden bridge in Japan or even in this prefecture!

    Good job!

  • Great effort! XD -- I would love to visit and see this in reality; it looks really cool in my honest opinion. And just thinking about the history that dates back to this bridge's time of construction amazes me. etc. -- After watching you skip across it... ...I feel like a race would set in well. haha. I would really like to race someone across it for fun...although, that may not be entirely safe. SO...a SKIP-RACE then! (^O^)/ If I ever visit this place with friends, I definitely will!

  • you look like you're having a lot of fun! i think the subscriptions must be a little different with this new system... i'm discovering vids that i didn't know were posted!

  • thats one hell ova bridge

  • LOL, I am too out of shape to skip a half mile!
